Migeun Chung Piano Teacher for Gray School of Music
A collaborative pianist, Migeun Chung, is a native of Incheon, South Korea and currently pursuing an M.M. in Collaborative Piano (Vocal Accompanying) at Carnegie Mellon University with Mark Carver and Jocelyn Dueck. She earned a DMA and MM degrees in Piano Performance from the University of North Texas with related studies in Vocal Accompanying from the University of North Texas studying under Adam Wodnicki and Elvia Puccinelli and received a BM in Piano Performance from Sookmyung Women’s University studying under Jongsuk Park in Seoul. She has over 16 years in an active role as a ballet pianist at the University of North Texas. Recently, she joined the NYDV (New York Dramatic Voices) in January 2020 as a collaborative piano in a training program under the renowned metropolitan opera legendary tenor Anthony Laciura and vocal coach Matthew Lobagh. She was named as a répétiteur/pianist for A Midsummer Night’s Dream to Opera NUOVA in summer 2019 and coach/pianist at the Opera Ozarks in 2018. She has extensive experience as a soloist and collaborative pianist including collaboration in opera, musical theater, orchestra, jazz ensemble, chamber music, choir, and ballet. In 2016, she was featured as a guest artist at Steinway Hall. She was the third-place winner in the International Symphonic Workshop Competition in Varna, Bulgaria in 2006 where she performed Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Bulgaria Varna Philharmonic Orchestra. In the past three years, not only she has been a principal keyboardist at CMU opera in 2018 but also, she has engaged in opera and musical theatre production at Bayview Music Festival and Opera in the Ozarks. She has had the privilege of working with renowned artistic directors including Thomas Cockrell, Stephen Dubberly, David Ward, Elaine Rinaldi, Louis Menendez, Chris Ludwa, Casey Robards, Latoya Lain, and Libor Ondras. She is currently working as an opera rehearsal/principal pianist at Carnegie Mellon University where she has worked under the batons of Thomas Douglas, Lidiya Yankovskaya, and Viswa Subbaraman. Her works include by George Frideric Hande’s Rinaldo Johann Strauss Jr.’s Die Fledermaus, Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Douglas Moore’s The Ballad of Baby Doe, Cinderella (a Pastiche) of Rossini and Massenet, Bizet’s Carmen, Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro, Gréty’s zémire et Azor, Kurt Weill’s Berlin to Broadway, and Stephen Schwartz’s Pippin. In her time as a staff pianist at Central Michigan University in 2017-2018, she performed Dunean Sheik’s Spring Awakening. Recently, she has played in masterclasses with Pierre Vallet, Margo Garrett, and Gerald Robbins. Continuously, Migeun has collaborated with internationally renowned music directors and coaches at NUOVA in summer of 2019 and at CoOperative program and Classic Lyric Arts in Italy through masterclasses, and performances, and opera – Michael McMahon, Kim Mattice Wanat, Shannon Hiebert, Liz Upchurch, Rosemary Thomson, Laura Loewen, Benjamin Butterfield, and Brian Deedrich. Also, she has continued works with internationally active and professional musicians in CLA in Italy. She has worked intimately with Glenn Morton (general artistic director of CLA), Ubaldo Fabri, Raphael Fusco, Pierro Corradino Giovannini, Micro Roverelli, and Donata D’Annunzio Lombardi. In the upcoming years, she looks forward to joining Interlochen Arts Camp in Michigan, Opera Lucca in Italy and Opera Steamboat in Colorado as a collaborative coach/pianist.
